10 Causes of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids also known as piles.  Sometimes you don’t know you have hemorrhoids until you see blood in the toilet water after a bowel movement, when you start to have pain or discomfort in the rectum or when you feel extra tissue around the rectum. Hemorrhoids are expanded blood vessels in the anus. They are caused by too much pressure in the rectum which causes the vein to expand and form a lump called a hemorrhoid.

The following are the common causes of Hemorrhoids.
  •          Strained Bowel Movement
Forced bowel movement either too hard or for long can cause hemorrhoids. Constipation, diarrhea, or poor bathroom habits can cause such strained bowel movement.  For easier smooth bowel movement try squatting toilets.

  •          Delaying Bowel Movement
It is understandable if you delay bowel movement because there is no proper toilet in the area, this will not cause much problem. But if on the other hand you delay bowel movement on a regular basis, fecal matter within the intestines get dried up and consequently gets harder.

While passing within the colon it put pressure on muscles and veins in the anal region which leads to the vein swelling around the anus and the rectum.

  •          Obesity
Carrying excess weight also put additional strain on all parts of the body especially the back area.

To avoid hemorrhoids cause by your weight you need to try and keep your weight within the healthy range for your body size by exercising and eating healthier.

  •          Sitting in the same spot for a long time.
Another major cause of hemorrhoids known is sitting down in one spot for a long time.
When you sit down for a long time, the lower part of your body is supporting all of your weight. If this continues for a longer time the veins becomes irritated and swollen, causing an erupt.

It is however recommended that you stand up and stretch and move around for a few minute every hour. This helps to reduce the chance of hemorrhoids.

  •          Eating Lower Fiber Diet
Constipation is caused by not eating enough fiber in your diet, this leads to straining. You can get more fiber in your diet from fruits and vegetables or even through fiber supplements which helps to soften your stool.

  •          Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the uterus gets larger and puts more pressure on the veins and blood vessels in the pelvic anal region which can cause hemorrhoids to become agitated and erupt.

During delivery some other women develop hemorrhoids because of the extreme pressure from pushing the baby out.
However, most hemorrhoids develop during pregnancy will go on its own. If not you will treat them using home remedies.

  •          Genetics
Some people inherit weak vein walls which could lead to hemorrhoids. However, this may not be the deciding factors. It is the sitting down for long, or standing or poor bathroom habits can lead to hemorrhoids.

  •          Constipation and Diarrhea
Both can cause hemorrhoids. Constipation is difficulty in passing stools due to hardening causing excessive straining. Diarrhea causes excessive passing of watery stools due to an adverse reaction. This damages rectal veins and leads to hemorrhoids.

  •          Disease
Rectal cancer prompts or causes an urge to defecate often, although you do not actually defecate. This unnecessary and frequent strain causes excessive pressure on your veins and leads to hemorrhoids.
Other disease includes heart ailments, liver diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, and intestinal tumors can cause hemorrhoids indirectly.

  •          Lack of Exercise

A lifestyle with almost little movement of the muscles can cause your muscles to lose their elasticity. This makes bowel movement difficult. This is a common problem in the elderly and sick people.
